Abstract

Forest schools have an important place among alternative education models and contribute to the holistic development of students by providing a learning environment in touch with nature. In Turkey, forest school practices have received increasing attention in recent years and have started to find a place in the education system. In this article, the educational philosophy and pedagogical implications of forest schools in Turkey will be discussed and their benefits for students and contributions to the education system will be evaluated.

Forest schools aim to increase students’ environmental awareness by connecting them with nature. In this context, outdoor education and nature-based learning methods support students’ academic achievement as well as their social and emotional development. Forest school practices in Turkey also adopt this philosophy and ensure that students receive an education in touch with nature.  The pedagogical effects of forest schools contribute significantly to the development of students’ independence, problem-solving skills and creative thinking abilities. Unlike traditional classroom education, forest school practices provide students with opportunities for direct experience and application. In this way, students have the chance to reinforce theoretical knowledge with practical experiences. By adopting this pedagogical approach, forest school teachers in Turkey make students’ learning processes more effective and permanent. Furthermore, the positive effects of forest schools on students’ physical health cannot be ignored. Time spent outdoors increases students’ physical activity levels and contributes to the development of healthy living habits. Forest school practices in Turkey also play an important role in this regard, supporting both mental and physical health of students. In conclusion, forest schools in Turkey stand out as an important educational model that contributes to the holistic development of students with its educational philosophy and pedagogical approaches. The nature-based education offered by forest schools contributes positively to students’ academic, social and emotional development. Forest school practices in Turkey have a great potential for the dissemination and integration of this education model into the education system. In this context, it should be emphasized that forest schools should be further supported and expanded.
